MINIJUST Raises Awareness on Human Trafficking Prevention and on ADR in Rubavu

On 15 September 2026, the Ministry of Justice, in partnership with UNDP, conducted a community awareness caravan in Rubavu District to raise awareness on Trafficking in Persons (TIP) prevention and on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

The campaign brought together community members, local leaders, youth, women, community representatives and other stakeholders involved in community protection and access to justice.

The awareness activity focused on helping communities understand common forms and warning signs of human trafficking, including deceptive recruitment and online scams. Participants were encouraged to remain vigilant when using digital platforms, verify information related to employment and migration opportunities, and report suspected trafficking cases through available reporting and referral mechanisms.

The campaign was held in line with the 2026 United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” which highlights the risks of trafficking linked to online scams and deceptive practices.

Through drama performances, participants were presented with practical scenarios related to trafficking, deceptive recruitment and online scams. The performances were followed by audience interaction, allowing community members to discuss the issues and seek clarification.

The caravan also raised awareness of Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms and their appropriate use. Participants learned about available mechanisms for resolving disputes amicably, their benefits and the importance of using appropriate dispute-resolution mechanisms.

A MINIJUST representative called on community members to remain vigilant, protect themselves and others from trafficking risks, report suspected cases and make appropriate use of available justice mechanisms.

Ms. Ingabire Joselyne, Senior State Attorney in the International Justice and Judicial Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Justice, who represented the Ministry of Justice, highlighted the importance of understanding and using appropriate Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms to resolve disputes peacefully. She also encouraged community members to verify information received through digital platforms and remain cautious of deceptive recruitment and online scams that may expose them to trafficking risks.

The Mayor of Rubavu District, Mulindwa Prosper, who also attended the caravan, called on residents to stay informed and vigilant against trafficking in persons. He encouraged community members to report suspected cases through the appropriate channels. On Alternative Dispute Resolution, he encouraged residents to use Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms to resolve disputes peacefully and strengthen social cohesion.
