Rwanda wins Commonwealth Access to Justice Innovation Awards
The 2024 Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting (#CLMM) is taking place in Zanzibar from 04 to 08 March under the theme: “Technology and Innovation: How Digitalization paves the way for the development of peoples centered Access to Justice”.
This has provided a platform for Law Ministers of Commonwealth countries to elaborate on how technology and innovation have potentially advanced equitable access to Justice by creating more streamlined and accessible processes, ensuring the scalable, transparent, responsive and data-driven transformation of justice systems.
During the CLMM, on 07 march 2024, Rwanda’s Ministry of Justice won the inaugural Commonwealth Access to Justice Innovation Awards for improving access to legal services for vulnerable people through its two innovative projects: Abunzi and IECMS meant to provide meaningful access to justice and help to achieve SGD target 16.3 of ensuring equal justice for all.
"When we do this innovation, it is because we want as many people as possible to have access to justice and have appropriate means of resolving disputes. Technology has helped us achieve that and being awarded is just a bonus." Said Minister of Justice/Attorney General, Dr. Emmanuel Ugirashebuja.
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General also chaired the last day of the meeting.
