Two-day workshop on effective Strategies for Countering Counterfeit Drugs and Substance Abuse

On Tuesday the 16th October 2018, the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with The Conference of Western Attorneys General - Africa Alliance Partnership (CWAG-AAP) organised a two-day workshop on "Effective Strategies for Countering Counterfeit Drugs and Substance Abuse"; which aimed at generally building capacity of members of the legal profession, law enforcement & judicial officers in Rwanda to handle emerging issues in the investigation and prosecution of counterfeit drug related cases.

While opening the workshop, the Head of International Justice and Judicial Cooperation, Ms. Umurungi Providence welcoming visitors and organisers from CWA-AAP, and commending them for their commitment to working with the Ministry of Justice and availing trainings on transnational crimes.

She further added that Government made great effort to build capacity of stakeholders in the sector of the administration of justice. "As government, we strive to build capacity of stakeholders in the sector of the administration of justice. Increased exchange of knowledge and best practices with experts across jurisdictions will strengthen further the ongoing efforts of the Rwandan anti counterfeit and substandard drugs actors." Umurungi emphasized

According to the World Health organization, up to 25% of drugs in the developing world are either falsified or substandard. However, Rwanda has been an exception in dealing with this emerging problem. Through its holistic approach to fighting counterfeit drugs by involving multiple stakeholders (health workers, customs officials and law enforcement officers) the country has recorded impressive progress
