50 Universal Periodic Review recommendations have been fairly implemented

On Monday 19th October 2020, the Ministry of Justice held a press conference to brief the media on the 3rd Universal Periodic Report of Rwanda recently approved by the Cabinet.

During the press conference, the head of International Justice and Judicial Cooperation in the Ministry of Justice, Madam Umurungi Providence pointed out that all the 50 recommendations have been fairly implemented. No recommendation was left out.  For the recommendations that required immediate and specific actions, all have been fully implemented.

“We have spent about five years implementing the 50 recommendations and we will be sending our progress report to Geneva this week. After that, we will be invited to present our report in January.” she added.

This report is the result of wide consultation throughout the 5 years following the second review. The report drafting process was led by the Ministry of Justice through a cross-institutional national Treaty Body Reporting Task Force.

Approximately 60 Stakeholders composed of Government's institutions, Civil Society Organisations, Private Sector, Development Partners & United Nations Agencies played a key role in the process from the implementation phase through the reporting phase.

The report highlights key legislations that were adopted starting from the 2015 Constitutional referendum. The focus is made on the legislations that further the human rights protection in general & the speaks to the 50 recommendations from the second review in 2015 in particular.
