Rwanda Embraces Peaceful Conflict Resolution Through ADR Clubs in Law Schools

From December 03-06, 2024, the Ministry of Justice, in partnership with the European Union, is spearheading the establishment of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) clubs in Rwandan law schools. These clubs aim to prepare a new generation of legal professionals who prioritize dialogue and amicable settlements over courtroom litigation.

To build a nation with a culture of amicable conflict settlement, it is essential to raise and strengthen young people in an environment that equips them to prevent conflicts and resolve them harmoniously.

The ADR clubs will serve as platforms to introduce the school neighborhood environment to the ADR policy, assess their needs, and garner support from students and school administrations. Specific objectives include promoting ownership and approval of ADR principles among young people and laying a foundation for a society rooted in peaceful conflict resolution.

This partnership underscores Rwanda’s long-term vision to strengthen the problem-solving culture from the grassroots to professional levels, ensuring that future generations are equipped with the tools and mindset necessary for reconciliation and sustainable peace.

Notably, on September 8, 2022, Rwanda adopted the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Policy, aimed at empowering citizens to resolve disputes without resorting to the litigation process.
