Rwanda Hosts Prestigious AFSA 2024 International Forensic Science Conference
Kigali, Rwanda – The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Dr. Emmanuel Ugirashebuja, speaking at the official opening of the AFSA 2024 International Conference, extended his heartfelt gratitude to the African Forensic Sciences Academy (AFSA) for selecting Rwanda as the host for this year's event. This significant conference brings together hundreds of scientists, forensic professionals, and key players from around the world to exchange knowledge in forensic science, technology, and ICT, all in the pursuit of enhancing justice across the African continent.
The Minister also expressed his appreciation to the Rwanda Forensic Institute (RFI) and its partners for their dedication in organizing such a monumental event. He further acknowledged the presence of forensic experts, academicians, prosecutors, lawyers, doctors, investigators, and professionals from all over the globe who traveled to Rwanda to participate in the conference.
“Rwanda has placed justice as one of its top priorities. We have invested heavily to ensure quality justice service delivery for all citizens,” the Minister highlighted. He noted that numerous reforms have been introduced in the country’s justice sector, with the establishment of the Rwanda Forensic Institute being one of the key achievements. As an independent body, RFI plays a critical role in supporting the justice system by providing scientific evidence used in courts and other judicial bodies.
The Minister emphasized that the RFI’s services not only improve the efficiency of Rwanda’s justice system by reducing case waiting times but also contribute to justice delivery across the region. Rwanda’s growing forensic partnerships with international organizations reflect the country's commitment to strengthening forensic science, technology, and collaboration to address pressing issues, such as the rising number of gender-based violence and child abuse cases in Africa.
“Our country is ready to work, collaborate, and support initiatives that bring solutions to the challenges faced on the African continent,” the Minister affirmed. He extended an open invitation to global stakeholders to join Rwanda in advancing forensic practices across Africa through forums, summits, and trainings organized by the RFI.
In closing, the Minister acknowledged the contributions of key partners, particularly the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS), the African Forensic Sciences Academy (AFSA), and the American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS). He also welcomed all international guests and wished them a successful conference and a pleasant stay in Rwanda.
With these remarks, the Minister officially declared the AFSA 2024 International Conference inaugurated.
